What You Will Learn

- Implement protocols based on assessment of the individual high-risk caries patient
- Evaluate prescription and OTC chemotherapeutic agents to guide product selection
- Separate myths from facts about antimicrobial protocols, ACP, CPP-ACP, ACP-ACFP, beta tricalcium phosphate, fluoride (silver diamine fluoride, sodium fluoride varnish, difluorosilane varnish, gels, rinses, toothpastes, lozenges, and drinking water), chlorhexidine varnish and rinses, bicarbonate rinses, xylitol, mucoadhesive tablets, and herbal products
- Critique new ADA guidelines
- Adopt step-by-step clinical techniques based on research for use with challenging patients
- Apply practical tips in selecting restorative materials (including bioactives)
- Utilize latest techniques for preparation, matrixing, and finishing
- Implement techniques for stepwise and “incomplete” caries removal
- Identify regional resources for referral and continued learning
Chemotherapeutic Management of Caries
The dental team now has a bewildering array of chemotherapeutic agents available to enlist in the battle to save the teeth of our high-risk caries patients. However, while some of these have good science behind them, others have little more than a glossy marketing ad to their credit. Dr. Huffines will guide you through protocols that are based on assessing risk of the individual patient. An unbiased, evidence-based evaluation of prescription and OTC chemotherapeutic agents without the media hype will furnish you with the latest information to guide your product selection. Root Caries: Proven Techniques for Frustrating Situations
Rarely mentioned a generation ago, root caries is now a common and often frustrating clinical problem. This presentation incorporates the latest research into step-by-step clinical techniques you can use with your most challenging patients. Learn practical tips on selecting restorative materials (including bioactives), exposing subgingival decay, preparation techniques, matrixing, finishing. Evaluate the evidence and learn the techniques for stepwise and “incomplete” caries removal protocols. The new ADA recommendations will be discussed in detail. Techniques are clearly explained by extensive use of clinical images and video clips so they can immediately be put into practice.
About Randy Huffines
Dr. Randy F. Huffines is recognized as one of the country’s leading experts on aging and oral health. He is a frequent speaker at meetings such as the Hinman, Chicago Midwinter, Academy of General Dentistry, to name a few. He is known for his ability to take complex oral health issues and translate them into easy-to-understand concepts and practical techniques the entire dental team can use immediately with their patients. Dr. Huffines is one of only a handful of practicing clinicians in the United States who has completed a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry. For the past 25 years, he has treated older and medically complex adults in a traditional private practice, in hospitals, and in nursing homes.
