He is married to the former Janet Johnson and they have two sons. Wingate teaches high school and coaches in the Wake County school system; Wiley recently completed an internship in music therapy at University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. Grandson Brady Pfeifer lives in Springdale, Arkansas, and is an avid Razorback fan.
Dr. Smith has enjoyed opportunities to stay involved in his community. His board participation and leadership roles include the Tom A. Finch YMCA, Thomasville Area Chamber of Commerce, Thomasville Rotary Club and the Davidson County Board of Health. He is an Eagle Scout and a former Scoutmaster; he still enjoys camping and being in the outdoors. In his church he sings in the choir, plays handbells, taught Sunday School, has served in leadership roles and was a youth counselor for over 25 years. He and his family have been blessed to be able to travel, with “travel with a purpose” as a major focus. Dr. Smith has participated on 13 mission teams, 7 of which involved dental and medical care.
