Foundational Sciences

The Department of Foundational Sciences provides a curriculum in foundational (basic and public health sciences) knowledge necessary to prepare dentists who are critical thinkers and life-long learners.
Faculty expertise in the department spans a broad range of disciplines, including molecular biology, pharmacology, craniofacial biology, neuroscience, immunology, anatomy, dental public health, clinical research and epidemiology. This breadth fosters cross-disciplinary collaborations in translation, clinical, and community-based educational research.
The curriculum emphasizes comprehensive, interdisciplinary training in both the basic biological and clinically-oriented oral health sciences. Faculty members hold joint appointments in other ECU health sciences schools and units, including the Brody School of Medicine, Department of Public Health, The Health Disparities Center, and the exercise physiology program in the School of Allied Health. The faculty generates and disseminates new knowledge and original concepts in oral health through creative education and scholarship.
The department replicates the vision of the school to enrich infrastructures between clinicians and basic scientists in order to communicate innovative science into clinical practice and advocate a new standard of care for patients.
