Dr. Craig Slotke is honored by Maryland State Dental Association
Craig Slotke, DDS, FAGD, faculty director of the ECU School of Dental Medicine Community Service Learning Center-Robeson County, was presented the Maryland State Dental Association’s Distinguished Service Award at the Association’s Annual Meeting on September 27, 2015.
The award is given to an individual who has contributed a lifetime of service to the dental profession. It is the highest award given by organized dentistry in the State of Maryland.
Dr. Slotke graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency at Baltimore City Hospital (now Johns Hopkins Bayview).
He was an attending dentist at both Baltimore City Hospital and James Lawrence Kernan Hospital before entering private practice. He practiced general dentistry in Baltimore for 34 years before starting a second career at the ECU School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Slotke served as a consultant and teacher at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Essex Community College, and Union Memorial and Kernan hospitals and has earned fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, International College of Dentists, Academy of General Dentistry, and the American College of Dentists, where he rose to become chairman of the Maryland Section.
He has been an active member throughout his career in many facets of organized dentistry, serving as president of the Baltimore City Dental Society, chair of the Maryland Section of the American College of Dentists, and alternate delegate to the American Dental Association (ADA) House of Delegates. He also completed ten years as Speaker for the House of Delegates of the Maryland State Dental Association.
Presenting the award was Dr. Kevin Doring, a longtime friend of Dr. Slotke’s and an officer of the Maryland State and American Dental Associations.
Dr. Doring said, “Dr. Slotke has had a lifelong commitment to organized dentistry and dedication to improving the dental care of his community. He is one of the most positive individuals I have ever met and, as a leader, he conveys that positive attitude to those around him.”
The ECU has established eight community service learning centers in underserved communities across North Carolina to provide hand-on experience for dental students and residents while providing access to care for adults and children. As faculty director of the center in Lumberton (Robeson County), Dr. Slotke works closely with students and residents to optimize learning and ensure the best outcome for patients.
“Dr. Slotke is a truly unique professional, who has devoted himself not only to his practice and his patients but to the profession of dentistry. It is our good fortune that he is working with our school in an educational capacity where he shares his vast experience in dentistry, his exceptional values and ethics, and his positive outlook with dental students, residents, staff and patients in the Robeson County area,” said Dr. Michael Scholtz, assistant dean for extramural clinical practices at the School of Dental Medicine.
