ECU School of Dental Medicine Continuing Education Series

All sessions take place in Ross Hall unless otherwise indicated.


Dr. Maged Abdelaal

Dr. Abdelaal earned a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from Cairo University School of Dental Medicine, Egypt, in 2004. He completed a residency program in removable prosthodontics at Cairo University in 2009 and a master’s degree in 2011. He was a faculty member in the removable prosthodontics department at Cairo University from 2009-2012. He was also in private practice part-time in Cairo for 8 years before coming to the U.S. in 2012 and completing a certificate in prosthodontics and a second master’s degree at the University of Iowa in 2015. From 2015 until joining ECU, he was a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Abdelaal is currently the Division Director of Prosthodontics.

Dr. Abrar Khalid Bakhsh

Dr. Bakhsh obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (BDS) at Al-Farabi Dental College, with a subsequent Advanced Training Certificate Internship. Dr. Bakhsh also completed an Orthodontic Fellowship at the University of Maryland, Baltimore and, most recently, earned an Advanced Program Certificate in Oral Medicine with a M.S. Oral Medicine from the University of California, San Francisco. She was awarded with the case report award at the AAOM 2022.

Dr. Hanan Elgendy

Dr. Elgendy earned a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from Ain Shams University, Egypt, in 2007 and was in private practice for 5 years before moving to the U.S. in 2012. She completed a masters in operative dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2016 & was a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry at Iowa from 2016 until joining ECU in 2019. Her major interest is CAD/CAM and cosmetic dentistry.

Dr. Alex Gillone

Dr. Gillone received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Cagliari School of Dentistry in Italy in 2009. Thereafter, he began clinical practice as a general dentist in Cagliari while attending the advanced training program in endodontics at the University of Bologna School of Dentistry. In 2011, he received the credential, “master of clinical endodontics,” from the University of Bologna. While greatly satisfied with private practice, Dr. Gillone realized a desire to pursue the surgical discipline of periodontics and study in the United States. He applied and was successfully admitted to the advanced specialty education program in periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) School of Dentistry. He completed the program and was awarded his certificate and master’s degree in periodontology in May 2016.

Dr. Acela Martinez Luna

Dr. Martinez Luna received her Doctor of Dental Medicine with honors from Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi in Mexico in 2009. Thereafter, she completed her certificate training in restorative dentistry at Centro de Estudios Odontologicos de Queretaro in 2011. After a year of private practice in her home country, she pursued specialty training and completed the advanced education program in Periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry (Periodontology certificate and MS degree) in 2015. Following her specialty training, Dr. Martinez Luna completed a one-year fellowship in advanced implant dentistry at the same university. Dr. Martinez Luna is the recipient of the Straumann New Periodontist Award (2017), Straumann SUPER Grant (2015), the North Carolina AADR Section Derek T. Turner Student Research Award (2015), and the UNC-CH Elsie and Baxter Sapp Fellowship Award (2014). Prior to her joining ECU, Dr. Martinez Luna practiced Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Queretaro, Mexico.

Dr. David MacPherson

Dr. MacPherson is a graduate of the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College, the US Army 2-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program, and he completed a MSc in Oral Biology through the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is Board Certified by and a member of the American Board of General Dentistry, and a Fellow & a member of the Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Lakshmi Senkumar

Dr. Senkumar earned a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, India in 2004. She practiced as a general dentist for 10 years in India until she decided to move to the US to further her education. She completed the Dental Postgraduate certificate program in Prosthodontics at the University of Michigan in 2018. She received her 3-year Prosthodontic training from 2019-2022 at New York University. Dr. Senkumar was awarded the Gary Goldstein Award of Excellence during her residency. Dr. Senkumar serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry at ECU SODM.

Dr. Moamen Sheba

Dr. Sheba earned a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from Cairo University – Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo, Egypt in 2011. He practiced as a general dentist for 2 years before pursuing his Prosthodontics specialty training in the same institution. He practiced as a prosthodontist until he decided to move to the US to further his education. He completed the 3-year Dental Postgraduate certificate program in Prosthodontics at the University of Iowa between 2017 – 2020, where he earned his MS degree in Oral Science. Dr. Sheba serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry at ECU SODM – Division of Prosthodontics. His areas of interest include treating complex prosthodontics cases, Digital and Implant Dentistry and Digital Dentistry Education.

Ms. Tamara Stephenson

Ms. Stephenson is a registered dental hygienist with over 40 years of experience between her work in private practice, Pitt County Health Department, Brody School of Medicine and East Carolina School of Dental Medicine. She holds certifications as a Public Health Dental hygienist, Community Dental Health Coordinator and Certified Dental Assistant.

Dr. Asha Sude

Dr. Sude earned her BDS degree from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in India. She completed her certificate in Orofacial Pain and MS from University of Minnesota. Subsequently, she graduated from Prosthodontics residency at University of North Carolina. She joined ECU as a clinical assistant professor in January 2024.

Dr. Michael Webb

Dr. Webb serves as the director of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at the ECU School of Dental Medicine. He received his dental degree from Northwestern University and completed a three-year residency in pediatric dentistry at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a residency in dental anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
