Kernersville native, ECU dental student, receives award from American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Greenville, N.C. (October 28, 2019)—Jiwon Lim, a fourth-year student at the ECU School of Dental Medicine, has received the William H. Bell Award for Predoctoral Achievement in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Previously known as the Dental Student Award and presented by the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ACOMS), the Bell Award provides education and recognition to dental students who may wish to pursue training in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Each accredited dental school in the United States may select one recipient for the award who has exhibited academic excellence and interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Award winners receive a certificate, an invitation to attend the ALACIBU and ACOMS 1stInternational Meeting in Hollywood, FL in 2020, and access the ACOMS online learning center.
Ms. Lim, a native of Kernersville, N.C., graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2014 with a double major in biology and music. She is a 2019-2021 North Carolina Area Health Education Center Scholar and a 2018-2019 NC Albert Schweitzer Fellow for Life. She has held leadership in the student chapters of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, the American Association of Women Dentists and the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry.
As a 2018-2019 J. Bradley Wilson Schweitzer Fellow, Ms. Lim and ECU Brody School of Medicine student Niki Winters expanded the services of an interprofessional medical-dental free clinic for homeless and uninsured patients in Greenville.
“I am honored to receive the William H. Bell Award,” said Lim. “I want to thank my classmates who encourage me to work hard and the faculty and staff who make everything possible. I’m especially grateful and forever indebted for the leadership and standards set by our school’s oral surgery faculty.”
“Jiwon is to be commended on receiving the Bell Award,” said Dr. Margaret Wilson, vice dean of the ECU dental school. “Her selection for the award by dental faculty recognizes her academic excellence and commitment to promoting the mission of the ECU School of Dental Medicine.”
After graduating from dental school, Ms. Lim plans to join a residency program to gain advanced training in general dentistry or in an area of specialized dentistry.
As fourth-year students, Ms. Lim and her classmates will complete three 9-week rotations at the school’s Community Service Learning Centers located in eight underserved communities across North Carolina—a unique opportunity to deliver care and learn about population health challenges in different parts of the state.
