Emily Wheeler Maltba Receives Pierre Fauchard Foundation Scholarship
Greenville, N.C., (July 30, 2019)—Emily Wheeler Maltba, a fourth-year student at the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine, has received a $1,000 Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Dental Student Scholarship.
Originally from Morganton, N.C., Ms. Wheeler Maltba graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2016 with a bachelor of science in nutrition and chemistry.
While in dental school, Ms. Wheeler Maltba has been vice president of the Class of 2020, served as class representative to the national Academy of General Dentistry, and tutored other dental students in the school’s simulation lab.
Over the next year, Wheeler Maltba and her classmates will gain 27 weeks of hands-on experience treating patients at the school’s eight community service learning centers in rural communities across North Carolina.
“I am so grateful to have been chosen for this award and hope to follow the path of the many mentors, faculty, and peers who have helped me along the way and who are doing remarkable things for the profession of dentistry,” said Wheeler Maltba. “I am excited to have chosen this field, thankful for my dental education thus far, and looking forward to the many years of learning and practice ahead of me.”
Dr. Margaret Wilson, vice dean of the ECU School of Dental Medicine, said, “Our faculty selected Emily to receive the PFA Foundation scholarship in recognition of her strong academic achievements, her demonstrated leadership skills and her outstanding potential for improving the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians.”
After she graduates in 2020, Wheeler Maltba hopes continue her education with a year-long residency program and then join a private practice in western North Carolina.
The Pierre Fauchard Academy is a global organization focusing on professionalism, integrity, and ethics for the advancement of dentistry worldwide. Its Foundation offers scholarships annually to selected dental schools for presentation to students who have demonstrate high leadership characteristics and above average academic qualifications.
